To say our Dutchess County country home is a passion project would be an understatement. We built it nearly a decade ago, when Studio DB was still just a scrappy firm with a handful of employees. We began by buying a big empty lot and dreaming. After many false starts, we found our ideal design: a three-story house with a concrete base that’s partially buried in a hill, and a structure with the outline of a gable roof on top. Every year, it seems we take on a new project. We added a pool; we keep expanding the gardens; we clear brush to open up more of the views. We even have plans to rig up a rope tow to turn our hill into a little ski slope. Life at the house is free, easy, and peaceful. To put it in the simplest of terms: it’s our home.

Our dog Marlowe waits patiently by the front door.

The front door is painted in an Yves Klein blue.

The living room, with a vintage Costela sofa designed
by Martin Eisler and Carlo Hauner in the foreground,
is open to nature on both sides.

Britt and Damian’s girls in the house’s courtyard,
with beloved horses from Hope Rising Farm.

A moody Alskar rug from Marc Phillips contrasts with the
clean lines of the bed from Suite NY in a child’s bedroom.

Floral covered mounds inspired by Maya Lin's
Wave Field provide intrigue and privacy.

Glow-in-the-dark Perseid wallpaper from Flat
Vernacular covers the ceiling of a children’s bedroom.

Nuvole al Tramonto wallpaper from Fornasetti
provides a magical back-drop in a child’s bedroom.

pool and rolling hills beyond.

A hillside of lavender provides an
inviting summer scent at the pool.

Lounge chairs painted in an array of colors
reside in the grass around the pool.

The house is terraced into the landscape,
with greenery growing on the different roof
levels and within the interior courtyard.
