After an adventurous renovation of their Upper East Side home, filmmaker duo Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin were looking for a fresh and functional space to serve as the headquarters for their production studio, Little Monsters Films. We worked together once again to create an office that—like the Academy Award winners themselves—favors the bold and pulls inspiration from across the globe. Located in New York’s Flatiron District, the 7,000 square foot office features large, open workspaces for entertaining, collaborating, and discovering. The dramatic entryway, lined in gold Calico wallpaper, immediately sets the scene. The state-of-the-art screening room—designed to be unlike any other in the city—features vintage Carlo Scarpa theatre chairs from the Auditorium in Via della Conciliazione in Rome (some reupholstered, most in the original daring red). To suit Chai’s singularly whimsical style, we created a custom neon pink desk with a Patagonia marble top that complements a family heirloom sofa in her colorful office.
