ONE VANDAM PHA
Project: One Vandam Penthouse A
Location: Soho, NYC
Size: 5,286 square feet
Status: Completed Winter 2016
We were brought on in the early stages of the project, resulting in a close collaboration with BKSK Architects, Stribling, Quinlan Development Group and Tavros Development Partners throughout all aspects of the design. Each of the parties brought great resources and ideas to the project. As the space evolved, it was very clear that this would be a special apartment. The design objective for the project was to create a modern environment that draws from the character of the surrounding neighborhoods. The building is sophisticated and vertical, with details that are tactile and at a scale that is very personal. American craftsmanship, particularly the work of designers such as Edward
Wormley, Paul McCobb, and Harvey Probber, was our inspiration throughout the process of designing Penthouse A.
One of the main design goals behind Penthouse A was to keep the space feeling light but with rich and natural materials. The finishes throughout were created keeping this in mind. The stone was honed, the tiles hand-glazed, the cabinetry and floor finishes were customized and crafted specifically for One Vandam. Details from BKSK's façade were incorporated into the interior design, which made for a seamless transition from interior to exterior. The triplex staircase creates a spectacular centerpiece for the Penthouse, taking advantage of the triple-height space and creating a dramatic effect. A custom LARIAT light fixture from APPARATUS was chosen to emphasize this breathtaking space. Additionally, sculptural furniture and luxurious textiles were sourced to further elevate the space. We partnered with modern craftspeople to create custom finishes and carry on the tradition of thoughtful design. The materials throughout the apartment are natural woods and stones that are used in a modern way. The kitchen, for example, is a bleached walnut, which allows for the beautiful character of the wood to read through, but the lighter tone is modern. The blue de savoie stone backsplash is honed to expose the natural elements of the material. Additionally, we designed a line of plumbing specifically for this project with Watermark, which is based in Brooklyn. The handle of the faucets are inspired by a stud, that play off both the artistic history of Soho and the refined jewelry of the high end vendors that currently define Soho.
